Pink Rocket Ship Toy

For awhile now, my sweet daughter has been telling me she wants to go to the moon.  And she wants her rocket ship to be pink and purple.  So, I made her one.

I got the idea when I found a plain rocket ship birdhouse at Michaels.  It seemed like it would be fun to paint it pink and purple and put it in the kids room as a decoration.  But as I started painting it, I decided it would be way more fun to turn it into an interactive toy.  So my awesome husband sawed it in half and added hinges.  Now, it opens.

For the star accents on the side, I painted a piece of paper with various shades of purple and then layered glow-in-the-dark paint on top.  Once dry, I used a star-shaped paper punch to cut out some stars.  I then used Mod Podge to adhere the stars to the side.  This allowed me to have a really clear outline of glowing stars on the outside of the rocket.  I also painted the inside with glow-in-the-dark paint and added wooden stars to leave a glowing star silhouette.

And obviously, I made accents with glitter paint and jewels.  Helpful tip, layer two different colors of glitter paint; it adds full coverage and depth and is tidier than loose glitter.

For the little astronauts, I painted little wooden figures.  I made two, one for my daughter and one for my son.  Because everyone needs a friend when they go to the moon.
